After a delicious breakfast at your hotel in Cusco, your guide will pick you up at 8:00 AM. We’ll head to the Maras Salt Mines (3,200 m / 10,499 ft). The drive takes about an hour along a paved road, turning into a dirt path closer to the site—don’t worry, your vehicle is fully equipped for the terrain.
Along the way, you’ll pass scenic fields of wheat, potatoes, and barley. During the rainy season, the entire landscape turns a vibrant green. Locals in this area dedicate their lives to farming and animal husbandry.
At the salt mines, you’ll witness over 3,000 salt ponds cascading down the mountain. The view from the top is breathtaking. Researchers believe these pools were originally used by the Incas to dehydrate food for preservation. To this day, salt is harvested in layers and used for culinary, medicinal, and agricultural purposes. The ponds are fed by natural springs flowing from the nearby mountains.
We’ll then continue to Moray (3,500 m / 11,483 ft)—an ancient agricultural laboratory used by the Incas to experiment with different crops at varying altitudes. The site’s concentric terraces form a striking visual against the Andean landscape.
After our visit, we’ll return to Cusco, where you can choose to be dropped off at your hotel or in the city center.
