After a delicious breakfast at your hotel, your guide will meet you at 8:00 AM to begin your tour. First stop: Maras Salt Mines (altitude: 3,200 m / 10,499 ft), about an hour away. The route is paved except for the final stretch, which is on a dirt road—don’t worry, your vehicle will be fully equipped for the journey.
Along the way, you’ll pass fields of wheat, potatoes, barley, and other crops. During the rainy season, this area turns lush and green. The local communities here live from agriculture and livestock herding.
Once at Maras, marvel at the more than 3,000 salt ponds carved into the mountainside. From above, the view is breathtaking. Historically, the Incas used this salt to preserve food through dehydration—a technique still used in remote communities. Salt is harvested weekly during the dry season and used for human consumption, medicinal purposes, and livestock. The ponds are fed by underground springs flowing from the surrounding mountains.
Next, you’ll head to Moray (altitude: 3,500 m / 11,483 ft), an ancient Inca agricultural laboratory. Its concentric circular terraces were used to experiment with crops at various altitudes and climates—creating a truly unique landscape.
Return to Urubamba for a buffet lunch, then continue to the fascinating town of Ollantaytambo (altitude: 2,792 m / 9,161 ft). This site served as a military and religious center during the Inca Empire. Considered one of Peru’s most picturesque towns, its cobblestone streets and original Inca canals offer a captivating glimpse into the past.
After the tour, you’ll return to your hotel in the Sacred Valley. Dinner is on your own.
